We at the YMCA are excited for your interest to take the course and become an American Red Cross (ARC) certified Lifeguard. By the end, Lifeguard candidates will learn, demonstrate, and receive a certificate in the skills of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR and AED valid for 2 years. Please understand that registration does not guarantee one’s completion of the course and a certification.
Prior to registration, participants must perform and successfully complete the prerequisite skills to become candidates for the course. This includes 2 tests:
Jump feet-first at the deep end and swim 150 yards (free/breast), then tread water with hands under the armpits, swim another 50 yards (free/breast), and then exit the pool without the ladder or steps.
Jump from the shallow end of the pool and swim 20 yards. Perform a surface dive and pick up a 10lb brick from the pool bottom. With the brick on one’s chest and with both hands holding the brick, they must kick back to the starting point, place the brick on the deck, and exit the water without the ladder or steps. This full sequence must be completed within 1-minute and 40 seconds.
It is the responsibility of the participant to arrive and complete these prerequisite tests before the registration date closes. Once these tests are concluded and a participant is deemed successful, they are a candidate for the course and may register via our front desk on that day.
After the class registration closes, the candidates will receive a Welcome Letter containing all links, agenda, and materials. The Blended Learning section must be completed before the first day of the course, and verification via email proof will be required. You can review the contents of the Welcome Letter by clicking here.
Please contact the Assistant Aquatics Director via email should you have other questions or concerns at akuehne@ymcabaycity.org.
Candidates must attend all classes. Candidates must be 15 years of age before or on the last class day.
Failure to complete the prerequisites before the registration dates closes and the Blended Learning before the first on-site date will result in dismissal from the course.
Candidates MUST attend all class dates. There are no makeups for class dates.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification course is to provide participants with the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting in order to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. To enroll in the Lifeguarding Recertification course, you must have a current certification or a certification expired by no more than 30 days for American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. To participate in the recertification course, you must be able to pass a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation, which includes two parts and takes place during the first in-person session.
This course follows a blended learning model, which combines online coursework (16 modules) with in-person sessions. You will receive this once class registration closes, and the online learning must be completed before the first in-person session day. You must provide proof that you completed this by one of the following methods: 1) Print your module completion record at the conclusion of each module and bring it to the in-person session. 2) Provide the verification of completion email that will be sent by American Red Cross upon successful completion of the online learning.
All other information such as the class agenda and what to bring and do to be successful will be given after class registration closes. All other questions or concerns about the course can be addressed to the Assistant Aquatics Director Anna Kuehne at akuehne@ymcabaycity.org
