Job Title: Childcare Assistant Teacher 

Work Location: Dow Bay Area Family YMCA Childcare Center location at 225 Washington Ave, Bay City 48708 or YMCA Childcare Center @ First Presbyterian Church, 805 Center Ave, Bay City

Reports to: Director of Early Childhood 

Status: Part Time (flexible – up to 29 hours per week) 

Schedule: Various shifts available Monday-Friday between 7:00am-6:00pm 

Compensation: Starting at $12.50 per hour and FREE YMCA Household Membership  

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Childcare Assistant Teacher will be responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher with giving care and providing a safe, nurturing environment for children in our childcare programs in accordance with the YMCA mission and core values. 

JOB DETAILS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Treat all children with love, respect, and dignity 
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and appropriate physical environment, always ensuring the safety of all children and compliance with all State of Michigan Licensing requirements 
  • Assist the Lead Teacher with implementing daily lesson/activity plans 
  • Complete incident and accident reports as necessary 
  • Know appropriate emergency and safety procedures  
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required 
  • Be familiar with procedures of reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protective Services 
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with children, families, teachers, and all staff 
  • Exemplify the YMCA core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty 
  • Help with other tasks as assigned by supervisor 
  • Serve as a representative and role model for the YMCA maintaining a professional demeanor  
  • Supports all aspects of the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA in the spirit of teamwork 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A love for children and a strong desire to make a difference every day 
  • Must qualify under State of Michigan licensing to work in a childcare setting including obtaining 16-24 hours of training each licensing year 
  • Prior experience working with children required 
  • Training in early childhood development is preferred 
  • Comprehensive fingerprinting and TB Test required per State Licensing 
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications or ability to obtain certifications post-hire required

Financial AsSistance Programs

Individuals will not be turned away from participating in programs, activities, and/or membership due to their inability to pay. The Y maintains a generous financial assistance program for youth, adults, and families who demonstrate financial need. Funding for this program is provided by fundraising events at the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA and community-wide donors.
