Job Title: Group Exercise Instructor

Status: Part-Time (up to 25 hours per week)    

Reports to: Sports & Wellness Director                   

Compensation: $20.00 per hour, Free Household YMCA Membership

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Group Exercise Instructor instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. The Group Exercise Instructor effectively builds community within the class and modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Creates, maintains, and leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group exercise classes to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals
  • Delivers exceptional service and experience to all Y members and guests
  • Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being
  • Demonstrates correct posture alignment and proper exercise form
  • Follows “Perceived Exertion” methods of monitoring exercise intensity
  • Develops fitness regimens to member needs
  • Stays current with advances in the health and wellness field
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture
  • Supports members in fitness routines and modifications as needed
  • Provides feedback on exercise adherence
  • Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being
  • Maintains all areas and equipment in clean, presentable fashion
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records
  • Handles member complaints
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations if needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification in areas of expertise preferred
  • Group Exercise Certification preferred
  • At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred
  • The ability to communicate verbally to individuals and small groups
  • Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certifications required
  • Reservations are for members only.

  • Reservations can be made up to 5 days in advance or until one hour before the class starts. If you wish to reserve a spot within one hour before class starts, please call the MEMBER SERVICE DESK.

  • Please be on time for your reservation. If you are late for your appointment, you will not get additional time. (e.g. your reserved lap swim time is 9am-9:45am, but you do not get in the pool until 9:20am, your reservation still ends at 9:45am.)

  • There are daily/weekly limits on some classes/areas to give opportunities to other members. The system will let you know if your daily/weekly limit has been reached.

Financial AsSistance Programs

Individuals will not be turned away from participating in programs, activities, and/or membership due to their inability to pay. The Y maintains a generous financial assistance program for youth, adults, and families who demonstrate financial need. Funding for this program is provided by fundraising events at the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA and community-wide donors.
